The Top Shelf: Ron de Jeremy Blended Rum

The Adult Rum that proves to have both style and substance.

Steeped in innuendo this rum catches the eye and immediately piques the curiosity.  There’s no doubt the novelty factor alone warrants a purchase; just sitting on the shelf is a real conversation starter.  Whether you are straight-laced or a real swinger, you’ve heard of Ron Jeremy.  His name transcends the industry that made him famous and has become somewhat of a pop culture figure, much like Linda Lovelace, John Holmes or Marilyn Chambers.  When I first heard of Ron de Jeremey Blended Rum I thought it was a clever play on words (Ron is Rum in spanish)  but when I saw the bottle and there on the label was none other than ”The Hedgehog” I had to laugh and knew I had to try it.

What will catch you by surprise is that beyond the suggestive marketing, “Long and smooth” , what you find in the bottle is an exceptional rum.  Any rum is mixable, put any brand in a glass with some cola and lime and you got a decent enough drink but few can stand on their own like Ron de Jeremey, as the man himself says “it’s perfect naked”

Distilled to honor Ron Jeremy, one of the most famous adult entertainment stars of our time, Ron de Jeremy (“The Adult Rum”) has been aged for seven years and expertly crafted by Master Distiller Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez. Both the nose and palate offer balanced, harmonious notes of fruit, oak and spice which are complemented by hints of vanilla and raw sugarcane on the long, elegant finish. -as described in DrinkUpNY.com

It’s a pretty accurate description done eloquently by a seasoned rum connoisseur. Someone less refined as myself would describe it as follows.  It darker than honey, it’s more amber colored that comes from seven years of aging.  There’s a luxuriousness to it… that is to say there’s a richness and depth to the color as it sits in the glass.

It smells a bit sweet.  ”Vanilla and Raw Sugar Cane”  … yeah, you can totally smell it;  there’s a sweet mellow warmth to it.  First whiff however caught the alcohol vapor, if you didn’t know it was 40% alcohol by volume, you do now…that was just the “Angel’s share” leaving the bottle, after which the aroma was quite pleasant.

Personally, I wouldn’t mix this with anything, this is a great sipping rum and should be appreciated as such.  Depending if you like the heat, drink it neat otherwise on ice with a splash of water turns the volume down without losing the flavor.  As soon as you take a sip it warms the mouth, starting at the tongue and spreading to the roof.  It’s not a stinging astringent shock, just a warmth that spreads until you swallow, then you feel it in the back of your throat for a second then fades… the warmth and mellow sweet flavor lingers on the tongue for a few more seconds before it too fades away.

Sweet but not too sweet is the general consensus and I whole-heartedly agree.  There is, like its amber hue, a depth and complexity to its taste.  The true star of this Panamanian rum is not its namesake but rather the man who created it.

Ron de Jeremy is the creation of Master Distiller Francisco Don Pancho Fernandez.   Who you ask?  Those outside the rum circles probably wouldn’t recognize the name but ask a harden rum enthusiast, or anyone in the industry (as far as my limited research is showing me), Don Pancho is kind of a big deal…some even use the word “Legendary”   His previous rum: Zafra “Master Reserve 21 Year Rum” is considered by many to be some of the finest rums produced today.  There are a few out there that disagree (there always will be) and even go to say that Don Pancho has done nothing more than sell out with this newest rum.  Consider this however, Master Distiller Francisco Fernandez wouldn’t be considered “Legendary” if it weren’t for his total commitment to quality; and he does it again with Ron de Jeremy…And another thing, before the news of Ron de Jeremy hit, if you googled “Master Don Pancho Fernandez”, do you think you’d get many hits?  …the defense rests.

Ron de Jeremy should be available this month (that’s May for those not keeping track) and can be purchased online.  Links to online retailers are available on rondejeremy.com A note about the website.  It’s one of the coolest, sexiest, liquor sites on the web today.  Even if you don’t like rum (and if you don’t then I’m sorry we cannot be friends) you really gotta check it out.

Bottom line, it’s a great rum that’s not afraid to have some fun.  I’ve heard this may be a limited release (I still need to confirm this)  so if you do come across it, get one for the shelf and another to sip.
